The original IBM PC and the DOS clones that followed put a text mode in every office: fixed character cells held in ROM on the video card. Every face on this shelf began life as one of those grids, drawn for CGA, EGA, VGA or the monochrome adapter.
The IBM PC had no proportional text at all. Its video adapters drew letters from a character generator: a fixed grid of character cells, 9 by 16 pixels on VGA, 8 by 8 on the earlier CGA, each cell one byte of code page 437. That set carried not just letters and digits but box-drawing pieces, blocks and shades, which a generation of DOS software used as a drawing kit.
The faces here are those ROM character sets, preserved. The VileR Ultimate Oldschool PC Font Pack rebuilds them as fonts in three readings: Px (pixel outlines at the native grid), Ac (aspect-corrected for the tall pixels of a real CRT) and Mx (mixed outline and bitmap strikes). Around them sit the catalogs' DOS-era conversions and text-mode designs.
