NES fonts

175 cataloged designs, 139 with rendered specimens, each rendered from the held file with its real coverage.

Nintendo Entertainment System
Launched 1983 in Japan, 1985 in North America · Peak 1987-1991

The NES has no system font at all: every cartridge carried its own tile alphabet, drawn to sit beside its sprites. The faces below are those alphabets, taken from the games that shipped them between the mid-eighties and the mid-nineties.

The NES has no text mode and no system font. Letters are pattern-table tiles, usually 8 by 8 pixels, stored in the cartridge as 2bpp planar graphics and drawn by the game's own code. Any game that talks to the player carries its own alphabet, which is why NES lettering swings from crisp kana-derived sets to wobbly hand-drawn capitals.

The designs on this shelf are those alphabets taken from the games themselves: fan conversions built over three decades, the homebrew scene's faces, and cataloged rips, each shown as a specimen with its real coverage, gaps included.
