Nintendo Game Boy
Launched 1989 · Peak 1989-1998

Four AA batteries, a four-shade screen and a decade at the top: the Tetris pack-in era first, then a second peak when Pokemon turned the handheld into a playground currency. Every face on this shelf was drawn for 160 by 144 pixels and four shades, and the good ones are lessons in how much letterform fits in an 8 by 8 tile.

The Game Boy has no system font and barely has a screen: 160 by 144 pixels in four shades, and every cartridge carried its own alphabet as 8 by 8 tiles, two bits per pixel. A dialogue font on this machine is an act of compression, letters squeezed into the same tile budget as the sprites, which is why the best Game Boy lettering, the Pokemon dialogue face above all, reads so crisply at so few pixels.

This shelf is conversions and recreations, labeled as such. The Almighty Guru's library converts the games' alphabets one title at a time, Game Boy Color editions riding on the same shelf, and FontStruct's creators redraw the famous faces tile by tile. No raw cartridge character sets are held yet and no Game Boy extraction pass has run, so nothing here pretends to be a rip. One honest gap: the best-known Pokemon recreation, LogoFonter's Pokemon Font (R/B/Y), sits behind FontStruct's login and is not held, so the shelf's Pokemon coverage comes from four other FontStruct designs instead. Donkey Kong Land is cataloged from a Windows FON file only; no TTF is held anywhere, so it appears without a specimen.
