What it matched
About the lettering
Rob Janoff's 1977 rainbow logo paired the bitten-apple symbol with the company name set in modified Motter Tektura. Apple moved on to Apple Garamond for its wordmark in 1984, then Myriad in 2002 and San Francisco in 2015; today the apple symbol is almost always used with no wordmark at all.
Common questions
What font was used in the original Apple logo?
The 1977 rainbow logo's wordmark was based on Motter Tektura by Othmar Motter (1975), with the 's' redrawn and the dot over the 'i' removed.
Why does the Apple logo have a bite taken out of it?
Designer Rob Janoff added the bite so the fruit read as an apple rather than a cherry, and sized it to fit the 'a' of the Motter Tektura wordmark.
What font does Apple use now?
Today's Apple wordmark-era font is San Francisco, Apple's own typeface introduced in 2015; the current logo is usually just the apple symbol with no lettering.
