Atari's 8-bit line ran from 1979 into the early nineties, and the 800XL was its best seller. The ANTIC chip drew text from a 128-character set in ROM, and every custom alphabet on this shelf is a descendant or a remix of that 8 by 8 inheritance.
Atari's 8-bit computers drew text with the ANTIC chip from a 128-character set held in ROM: ATASCII. Each character is an 8 by 8 grid, and the second half of the set is the first half in inverse video, apart from a run of graphics characters for lines, blocks and corners that BASIC programmers drew pictures with.
This shelf holds the stock set and its descendants. The EightBit Atari Fonts library converts hundreds of ATASCII variants, from magazine type-ins and demos to game alphabets, and Mark Simonson's Atari Classic rebuilds the original set with the graphics characters mapped into the Private Use Area.

Anonymous [sic - file literally reads “Anonymous”; contextually “They”] may not be sold or offered for sale, or included with another software product offered for sale, except with my express written permission. Online services and bulletin boards may make it available to their users at no charge other than the normal connection fees. Non-profit user groups which hold regularly scheduled public meetings may distribute it at no charge. Print, CD-ROM, and text magazines may publish it on CD-ROM, floppy disk, or online where applicable, without my prior consent, as long as I get a copy of the issue containing my font within two months of release of the magazine.
